Strategic Planning and Counsel
Our strategic planning approach blends education expertise with traditional planning. We bring our policy, communications and public affairs knowledge to help clients clarify their goals and align their strategies, capacity and resources to make a difference in the education sector. We understand the national reform landscape, and—since we’ve worked for policymakers, been grantmakers and led nonprofit organizations ourselves—understand the pressures education leaders face. Our planning work for clients encompasses organization-wide strategic planning, business planning, and new program research and development.
Our Approach
We believe no strategic planning process should look exactly the same, as no organization has the same needs or opportunities. Instead, our planning and research engagements are tailored to each client, typically done in three or four major phases, conducted over three to six months depending on the organization’s capacity, and led by a team of up to four Education First team members, including partners with particular expertise. By the end of each engagement, our clients walk away with clear goals, a “theory of change” that spells out which activities will accomplish these goals and a practical roadmap of specific actions to guide the organization’s work.
Our specialties include:
- Research and benchmarking
- Expert facilitation, process design and support
- Plan development and writing
- Communications and outreach
