Common Core State Standards Tool for Legislators
In this tool we provide a set of questions legislators can ask to know if their state is on track with both implementation of the Common Core and the transition to common assessments. We group the questions into the most important areas for legislators to understand regarding the standards: curriculum and instructional materials; assessments; teacher professional learning; teacher preparation; and teacher and principal effectiveness. Each section provides legislators with context on the area before listing questions to help them gather background knowledge and assess the state’s efforts from the perspective of their oversight, authorization and appropriation roles.
We produced the tool in collaboration with Achieve, the Aspen Institute and Insight Education Group. The National Council of State Legislators featured it in dissemination blasts and events for state lawmakers and their staffs.
