Every student should graduate from high school empowered to pursue their passions, make an impact, and earn a comfortable income. The most powerful way to break cycles of poverty, open up lifelong opportunities, and boost the success of individuals and the success of our broader economy is through high-quality education that meets students where they are and helps them move forward with purpose. Research shows that these experiences help put students on a path to success:
The Commission has set out to define what it takes to and what it looks like when these experiences are woven together into a purposeful pathway.
The Commission on Purposeful Pathways brings together youth representatives alongside adult leaders, practitioners, and researchers representing K12 education, higher education, and the workforce to better define and connect key experiences that empower students to successfully see, understand, get and stay on great pathways. The Commission seeks to shape a national agenda that drives measurable impact by providing a clear vision for how pathway experiences, when integrated, can uniquely propel students toward their desired futures. To that end, the Commission will be publishing a report and resources in early 2026.
The Commission’s work will also serve as a foundation for the Pathways Impact Fund — a new national initiative being incubated by StriveTogether in partnership with the Walton Family Foundation and Gates Foundation. This Fund will mobilize increased funding for regional intermediary organizations—beyond funding, it will also help organizations understand and deliver the experiences defined by the Commission and identify bright spots for further research and support.
The Commission is funded by the Gates Foundation;f acilitated by Education First; and co-chaired by Melissa Connelly of One Goal, Paul Herdman of the Rodel Foundation, and John Garcia III of the Pathways Impact Fund.

Throughout this process, the Commission will be seeking input and feedback from the field via conference presentations, focus groups, and 1:1 conversations.
That feedback will help shape the report, which will include a vision for how to design and/or reform purposeful pathways plus a perspective on the enabling conditions needed to sustain purposeful pathways.
Accompanying the report will be a measurement framework to support the assessment and continuous improvement of these pathways experiences and a Youth Engagement Playbook (developed by young adult commissioners and supported by Big Picture Learning) to provide recommendations for how students can be engaged in designing and implementing these experiences.
