The federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides an important opportunity for district and state leaders to pursue their visions for equity in education. To help them take full advantage of that opportunity, we partnered with the Aspen Institute Education & Society Program, Chiefs for Change and EducationCounsel to produce Seizing the Moment: A District Guide to Advance Equity Through ESSA. This suite of tools identifies eight equity priorities many leaders are already pursuing and identifies potential barriers to equity, key decision points and opportunities to braid and blend federal funds. The priorities are:
- Addressing disproportionate exclusionary discipline
- Ensuring equitable funding
- Improving access to high-quality instructional materials
- Increasing access to advanced coursework
- Increasing access to effective teachers and leaders
- Integrating social, emotional, and academic development
- Leveraging school improvement to advance equity
- Supporting English learners
