Supporting our DREAMers

At Education First, we work towards the vision that all students—particularly low-income students and students of color—receive an education that prepares them for success in college, career and life. Implicit in this vision is the belief that every child, when given the right supports, can achieve their dreams; a child should never be defined or limited by their background.

That is why we strongly oppose the Trump Administration’s reversal of DACA. The estimated 800,000 young people who have participated in the program came here through no choice of their own, and are eager to contribute to American society. Denying them the opportunity to fully participate in our democracy is cruel, shortsighted and a direct affront to our mission and values. In the coming weeks other Ed Firsters—including former educators who taught undocumented students—will be sharing their reflections on this.

It is also noteworthy that many DACA recipients are or training to be effective educators. In addition to their classroom instruction, they can serve as powerful role models for students who are also facing challenges. They want to give back to the next generation, but may not have the chance.

We will be encouraging our representatives in Congress—and we hope all of the organizations with which we have worked over the past decade will as well–to protect these young immigrants by passing the DREAM Act or similar legislation. Here are some resources:

  • Teach For America has a list of ways you can support the DREAM Act
  • Join the American Federation of Children, Stand for Children, the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents and others in signing a letter of support
  • See how Educators for Excellence is helping educators support the DREAM Act

We will continue to work to improve opportunities for all children. If you have any comments, questions or additional resources, don’t hesitate to reach out to any Ed Firster by phone or email or @ed1stconsulting.
