Assessment Design Toolkit

Measuring what students know and can do is an essential part of teaching, and like many teaching practices, designing assessments is sophisticated work. In this toolkit, produced under contract as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Reform Support Network (RSN), we provide teachers with the essential skills and resources they need to plan, write and select well-designed classroom assessments that can be used to monitor students’ progress, measure growth, adjust instruction and intervene with struggling students.

The toolkit is comprised of 13 modules, each consisting of a video, a PowerPoint presentation and a narrator’s script. In each module we cover a different topic related to assessment design, including with the purposes of assessment, types of assessment items and five essential elements of assessment design. The primary audience for the toolkit is classroom teachers, but state, district and school leaders can also use these materials to plan professional development on assessment design.
